TIMTEM PROJECT ACTION - "TELEMEDICINE IN MY ISLAND"

PC SEMINARS FOR YOUNG ISLANDERS

Summary

The education of the young islanders of Tilos seem to be a gap observed in the past overviews of the project. Fulfilling these goal an infrastructure of a human resource is assembled and the status of the inhabitants is prepared to understand, participate and accept a  project as the Tilos Telemedicine-TIMTEM Project. For these reasons the "Telemedicine in MY Island" PC Seminars Action was organized.

Introduction

Nowadays  the evolution of the technology and the science called computers  as well as  their applications are rapidly evolving. Thus the familiarization and further education of the young islanders of Tilos  seem to be crucial. As early observed in the past updates of the TIMTEM Project the most difficult factor is represented by the training of the personnel of the island. For these purposes the "Telemedicine in My Island"  Computer Seminars were organized. The initiative of the Head of the TIMTEM Project Prof. Enrico Cavina of the Pisa University Surgery Department was well accepted by the Agean University of Rhodes and the Municipality of Tilos.

Means and Methods   

The Computers Seminar were took place on the 20-25 of August, 2002 at the Public Lyceum-Gymnasium school of the Tilos island. In the computer lab of the school, were the seminars were held, the number of the available Personal Computers (PC's) were 8, from which only the 5 functioning. All of them have access to the Internet and availability to print. The Operating System of the PC's is Microsoft Windows 2000 and there is availability of the Microsoft Office 2000 Greek and English. Furthermore for the needs of the seminars a projector and web cameras were used as additional resources.

The participation of the inhabitants,15 students,  on the Seminars was satisfactory considering the island standards.

From which the 11 females and the 4 males. The average age of the participant is approximately 27 years. There were 30 hours of lessons and two teachers were occupied, one from the Agean University- Σαριδου Χρυσάνθη and the other, member of the Research team of the TIMTEM Project Βασίλειος Παλικτζογλου. For consistency and flexibility the participants were separated into two groups, where both of the teachers were occupied in each of the group. One of the group was considered as having some familiarization with the Personal Computers and the other ready to be introduced to.  Furthermore the didactic material was arranged by the Agean University with the collaboration of the TIMTEM responsible member. Basic point and most crucial point of the seminars was the establishment of a friendly environment in order to achieve a possible confidence of the participants in operating and handling all the tasks.

The Seminars were considered as a "success" and the optimal job done by the responsible was awarded with the satisfaction of updating the level of knowledge and familiarization of the participants and young inhabitants of Tilos.      

Discussion

One ca argue that the fist wave of educating of the young inhabitants of Tilos is reality, thus the participants have established some familiarization with the technology and computers. However it is important to note that this seminars despite the fact that are considered as "success" is not a panacea or the final solution of the existing gap in computers education of the inhabitants of the island. These kind of Actions improve the situation and the level of knowledge of the inhabitants, however  there must be a consistent and continuous education of the inhabitants in order to come to the desired point. At this moment the main goal of the seminars was achieved, give the ability to the inhabitants to comprehend and use the power of technology and computers. Finally it is important to take under consideration the previous reports of the TIMTEM Project where the "Human Factor" problem is a observed as a major issues.
