LIFE Program, Local Authorities of Kefalonia and Ithaca (TEDK-KI)

The financing and implementation of pilot projects, concerning the areas of environmental management that are considered as the most important, is foreseen within the framework of the program: "Sustainable Development and Tourism on Kefalonia and Ithaca".

The study and implementation of a recycling system for paper and aluminum in Lassy, an area of the island of Kefalonia visited by many tourists every year, is placed within the implementation scheme of the pilot projects. The recycling program started in the beginning of the project.

Implementation of the recycling system

The necessary actions for the implementation of the recycling program were carried out during the period of: November 1997 - June 1998.

Initially, a technical and economics study was worked out. Following, the necessary equipment (recycling bins, press, tidying up of the building e.t.c.) were bought and installed.

kadoi.jpg (51063 bytes)The systematic collection of Paper and Aluminum began on 20/06/1998. By then all 27 recycling bins for paper and 15 for aluminum were placed in the areas of Lassy, Svoronata, Kourkoumelata and Lourdata.

During the period of: 20/06/1998 - 25/08/1998, 17 tones of paper and 300 kilograms of alouminiun were collected.track.jpg (41219 bytes)

The amounts collected, exceeded any prior estimation. It is obvious that the local community makes efforts to incorporate efficient environmental management systems.

The recycling project will be carried out throughout the program till its end. However the locals should try to find the necessary funding in order to continue the recycling project, even after the end of the program.
