The Ionian Sea surrounds two of the most beautiful islands of Greece: Kefalonia and Ithaca. These two exquisite destinations haven’t yet been affected by tourism’s outbreak and its negative effects, seen in other parts of the world.

The duration of the European program “Sustainable Development & Tourism” is : November 1997 - November 2000. The aim of the program is the incorporation of the principles of sustainable development. Such development will fulfill the human needs of the present, without stopping future generations to fulfill their own needs.

The program is implemented by the Association of Local Authorities of Kefalonia and Ithaca (TEDK-KI) and is financed by : LIFE (XI Directorate of European Commission).

For the implementation of the program TEDK-KI cooperates with the International Environment Agency for Local Governments (ICLEI) and the Municipality of Calvia (Majorca).

 

The Hoteliers’ Association of Kefalonia and Ithaca and the Intermunicipality Sanitation & Environmental Protection Enterprise of Kefalonia, participate in this program, as well. In addition, other local groups related to tourism development in the two islands, play a very important role in the program.

 

The implementation of this pioneer European program will put the two islands in a very advantageous position, setting them up as the example (reference) for Greece.
