The project comprises the following seven phases: 

Phase I: Organization of the Project (November 1997 - February 1998)

The first phase of the project includes the general organization of the project and the organization of meetings between the management team and the local community. The Kick-off meeting includes the official presentation of the content and objectives of the project.


Phase II: Assessment of Current Status in Tourist Enterprises - Implementation of Pilot Projects (February 1998 - April 1999)

The second phase of the project includes identification of the specific problems encountered and dealt with in selected tourist enterprises in relation to sustainable tourist development on the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca, as well as at implementing pilot projects in those areas recognized of great importance. The necessary information was collected by carrying out eco-auditing in selected hotels. The audit will be particularly focused on the fields of:

Waste management
Water management
Energy   saving
Green purchasing

 

Phase III: Building Partnership in Assessing Other Sectors Closely Related to Tourist Development (July 1998 - April 1999)

The eco-auditing in selected tourist enterprises is followed by the identification of the problems encountered in the fields that are closely related to sustainable tourist development, regarding both islands. The issues that will be considered are the following:

Natural environment and beauties of Kefalonia and Ithaca.
Quality of bathing and drinking water.
Solid waste management.
Energy saving.
Land use planning and management of coastal zones.
Public Transport
Assessment of the tourist services offered.
Internal organization of the local authorities.

The aforementioned issues are assessed by a group of experts in cooperation with local authority officers who will be expressing their views in public meetings.

  

Phase IV: Formulation of Action Programs in Partnership with all Interested groups (May 1999 - November 2000)

Based on the problems identified during the implementation of the third phase of the project the areas where priority for action should be given are recognized.

  

Phase V: Training of all Interested Groups (July 1999 - November 2000)

workshop.jpg (2707 bytes)The aim of environmental training is to increase the awareness of all the bodies of local community involved in tourism on environmental problems and show them the contribution they can make towards the development of sustainable tourism.

This phase includes the organization of a joint seminar which is arranged as a course with the participation of all tourism related interested parties.

In addition to that, several seminars are arranged for the training of: hotel staff and management, public services officers and representatives from the business and trade sector.  

  

Phase VI: Awareness raising and dissemination of project results (November 1997 - November 2000)

coom1.jpg (4577 bytes)Well designed awareness raising material (brochures, newsletters, etc) will be prepared and distributed throughout the project, while towards the end of the project a guide will be distributed to the all interested Municipalities and the tourist enterprises of the area. The guide will focus on:

energy saving
water management
solid waste management
green purchasing
promotion of local products

Furthermore, this phase includes the organization of an International Conference for sustainable tourism, with the participation of all interested parties (TEDKI-KI, Municipality of Calvia, ICLEI, local authorities, etc).

  

Phase VII: Monitoring-Evaluation of Project Results. (November 1997 - November 2000)

zygos.jpg (2194 bytes)Sustainability indicators will be used throughout the project for monitoring in order to ensure that the objectives set at the beginning of the project are reached. The results of the evaluation will be made public in order to promote open discussion and comments.
