The Kick-off Meeting of the Project

  

The Kick-off Meeting took place in the Municipal Theatre of Kefalonia on Saturday the 31st of January 1998.
The meeting was greeted by: the president of TEDK-KI, Mr. Nikolaos Frantzis, the Prefecture’s representative in the Parliament, Mr. Alekos Kalafatis, the representative of LIFE in Greece and Portugal, Mr. Theodoros Tharouniatis, the Mayor of Argostoli, Mr. Gerasimos Fortes, the Mayor of Ithaca, Mr. Telemahos Karavias and the president of the Association of Hotelier’s of Kefalonia, Mr. Spyros Galiatsatos, as well as many other representatives of the local community.

During the meeting, which had a major turn-out, local authorities’ representatives expressed their opinions concerning sustainable tourist development on both of the islands, showing a great deal of interest for the program.
The main topics of discussion were the following:

Promotion of the program by the locals
Accession of environmental education into schools
Briefing of the professionals and co-ordination of their
       efforts
Promotion of local products and customs through tourism 
Promotion of alternative forms of tourism
Enactment of rules regarding the protection of the
       environment (natural & man-made) 
Examination of all the fields related to the environment
       and to tourist development

Many of the issues that trouble the local community and are related to tourism and development were discussed during the meeting.
The meeting, which had a positive impression on the locals, sensitized them on matters of the environment.
