THE MYTH OF EUROPA
Europa was the
daughter of Phoenician's King Aginora and Tilephasas, sister of Kathmos and
mother of Minoa, Sarpithonas and Rothamanthis.
Because of Europa’s exquisite beaty, Zeus seduced Europe secretly from
Hera. He carried her to Crete to hide her from her family. Zeus transformed
himself to a
bull, in order to fool her during the abduction, and when he arrived to the mainland he
presented his god like figure to Europa.
Europa’s mother and brothers searched for her with no result. Kathmos
during his search reached Greece.
Later, Zeus arranged
for Europa to marry Asterionas, who adopted her children. Hsiodos
“Theogonia” presents Europa as Ocean’s and Tithias daughter. Another
tradition suggests that Europe comes from Zeus designation as Euriopos (The one
who see everything).
Trojan’s heroes Hector,
Polythamas and Ecavi were praying for Europio Zeu’s help during the war and it
is said that they came from Thessaly (Polythamas country), wich was the
center of Euriopa’s worship.
