VIEWING FACILITIES
The airport of Mytilene "Odisseas Elitis"(IATA
MJT/ICAO LGMT) is located south of the town at the distance of
about 10Km from the center.
The runway is the 15/33,with dimensions 2414m length and 45m
width. Also there are overrun asphalt surfaces after the 2 ends
with length 61m/Rwy33 and 50m/Rwy15.The pavement of the runway,
apron and taxiways, substituted recently and delivered at 1st of
April 2000.Although the strength (PCN-pavement classification
number) of the runway asphalt surface increased, so that can
landing aircrafts like Boeing 767-200 or Airbus A310-300 or and
maybe bigger, until to today the biggest that attempt are the
Boeing 757-200. This happening cause the tourist movement
and booking are few.
The interest period is only the summer season dew charter
flights beginning from April and finishing at October.
The main apron is the "South" and has 4 parking
position for medium jets (I observed 2 B757-200 & 2 A320-200
at the same time). The auxiliary "North" apron is
unserviceable but is using by general aviation aircrafts,
military aircrafts and LESVOS AIRCLUB. Also is in use
extraordinary when 5 aircrafts are on the ground the same time
and there arent another parking position free at the
South apron.
When the winds are calm the usually runway in use for landings is 15 and 33 for the take-offs. When blowing North winds the runway in use is only 33 and when blowing South winds the only runway in use is 15(landing, take-off).
The airport is filed as CIVIL
only in the International DOCs but photography forbidden inside
or outside the Airport. !!!
For the brave spotters I have to give this information: (use them with your own responsibility)

GENERAL INFORMATION
1)You
can't take photos from inside of the terminal
(arrivals-departures) 'cause the doors and windows are small and
plus the blast curtains from outside preventing the view. From
the first floor that there are the Greek Civil Aviation authority
offices and from the balcony you can take very good photos !!!
Ask a question first to take license for this.
2) There is a dirt road around the airport (hug it) but the good
spots that I have to propose below are only 2(the spot numbers on
the above map) cause the trees and the high protecting fences
(nettings) of the Airport preventing the view.
SPOTS(on map)
No1* is after the terminal buildings of the Airport when turning on the first right on the dirt small road continuing straight and near to the threshold of runway 33 'cause there come closer from runway.
No2* you can find it when turning right from the main Mytilene-Airport national road, in the dirt up hilling road and there is a place behind the threshold of 15(about 150m from it, little higher from runway).
(*Protecting fences unfortunately preventing the view)
BONUS spots:
1)A very good place but you need big zoom lens (>300mm), it's at the entrance of the "Agia Marina" village (my mama's birthplace), and it's about 6km from the Mytilene driving the main national road Mytilene-Airport and turning right, it's easy to find it.
2)A hill named Ilias prophet** with a small church on the top near Kagiani village. Its located before Agia Marina. From there you have the airport on your feet but you need big zoom lens too.
**attention: It isnt the mountain with the same name above the city with a lot of antennas on the top
