GENERAL INFO
CAUTION!!!!!!! Heraklion is a military airport and photography is generally not allowed. But the airport is really busy. So we found some ways for quite safe spotting. Best days are Friday (140 flights) and Monday (130 flights).
Most of the time runway 27 is in use. After the last incident with a Russian aircraft in July 2000...I don't believe that RWY09 will be in use again for a long time! Some commuter flights use for departure only runway 31.

Airport layout (not to scale)

A. Is the
appartments with view on the runway 27 approach. Nice rooms
with parking for car and bus connection to the airport and
Heraklion city center.
Reservations possible via e-mail or direct.
B. This is the place from which all photos have been taken. Nice quiet beach with very nice view. For photos you need a long lens (such as300mm)and an extra advantage is that you can see the registration of the departing aircraft when executing the back track on runway 27 for departure. Its very close to walk to if you are at A or you can use a bus to get there.
C. That is the best place for photos at Heraklion. Its called "Kako Vouno" (Greek for "Bad Mountain") and on the corner of the road there is a cantine. There, you can get everything with an 85-200 lens. Getting there, though, is a slight problem (no bus passing nearby). A good solution is to take a taxi from the airport (costs about 1500Drs).
D. There, there is the snack bar at the 1st floor of the airport. There is a good view of the ramp and its easy with no binoculars to get the registrations. But I suggest that you don't stay there for too long, as there will probably be problems with the police or the CAA. If you need to shoot something very special, use the technique "fire and forget": go, get your photo and get out of there ASAP!!!
